    Introduction

REC Networks is in the process of assuring that our websites are accessible to blind and visually impaired users to the furthest extents possible. This will include making adaptions to existing pages or making alternate versions of the pages.

We will make adaptions to existing pages whenever possible.

    How We Adapt

REC will undertake various efforts to adapt its websites to be blind friendly. These include:
  • The use of ALT tags on REC controlled content. This allows a blind user using screen reader software to get a description of what a graphic on the screen is for. In some cases, it is vital since websites use graphics as links and screen readers can not read the text inside a graphic.
  • The use of header tags whenever possible. We will do our best to format web pages using the H1, H2, etc. tags. This makes for a much friendlier readout when using a screen reader.
  • Provide text links whenever possible. If there is a graphic link, make sure that the graphic link has an ALT tag but also whenever possible, provide a text link to the same content somewhere on the page.
  • On tools and pages where adaption is a challenge or would result in a bad user experience (either for the sighted or blind user), providing a separate version of a particular piece of content. An example is what we did with the REC Networks Home Page.
  • On technical tools like our Broadcast Query, develop versions of the application that will require minimal work by the screen reader user to use this page. This includes the ability to have the tool return characters in single digits and letters, say letters phonetically and look at the design of output that would be friendly with 40-cell refreshable Braille displays.

    Font Sizes/Large Type

Many REC sites use style sheets to control font size and we use fixed page widths as a part of the visual presentation. REC recommends that for viewing content that Mozilla Firefox is used for browsing our websites.

    How We Test

Pages will be tested using popular screen reader software. We are still looking at ways we can test using Braille displays.

    How To Start

Users wishing the accessible content may start with going to access.recnet.com. This page will link to all of the same REC content as the main page but if an accessible version of the site is available, we will link specifically to that content.

    Third Party Providers

REC receives third party graphical content that may display on our websites. We do our best to assure that they have proper ALT tags and other descriptive information but sometimes, the issue is beyond our control. This can include content from:
  • Amazon.com
  • YesAsia.com
  • Live365
  • User submitted linked graphics on POWERPUFF.COM
  • Hardcore J Friends
